A high-level conference of E-9, a forum of nine high-population countries, began here Sunday to discuss policies necessary for the member states to achieve the United Nations’ education-related “Sustainable Development Goal-4”. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the conference to achieve the goals of Unesco’s Education For All (EFA) initiative at Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden hotel. This is the first time Bangladesh hosting the education minister-level conference of the forum.

At the opening ceremony of the conference, the Bangladesh Education Minister took the charge of the ‘E-9’ chairmanship. This is for the first time any Bangladeshi education minister is made chief of the forum. Education ministers of the member countries will take part in the conference.

Pakistani Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training Muhammad Baligh Ur Rehman was the previous chairman in this forum.

‘E-9’ where ‘E’ stands for education and the ‘9’ represents nine member countries — Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria and Pakistan — representing over half of the world’s population and 70 percent of the world’s illiterate adults, was launched in 1993 at the EFA Summit in New Delhi, India.
