The new Ambassador of the United States to Sri Lanka, Alaina Teplitz, has met with the Speaker of Sri Lanka’s Parliament, Karu Jayasuriya, to discuss the current political crisis in the country.
Ambassador Teplitz, who officially began her tenure in Sri Lanka on 1 November, said in a Twitter post that she had met the Speaker to discuss the importance of Parliament reconvening to end the political crisis.
The US Ambassador said democratic institutions should serve the people of Sri Lanka, allowing the elected representatives to decide on the government. “Met Speaker of Parliament Hon. Karu Jayasuriya @KaruOnline to discuss the importance of Parliament reconvening to put an end to this political crisis.
These democratic institutions should serve the people of #SriLanka; let the elected representatives have their say,” the tweet read.
