Located opposite the South Gate of Narayanhity Museum in Kathmandu, Utsav is a restaurant which serves authentic Nepali cuisine. Founded around 1940, it has become very popular among locals and tourists alike. It caters to weddings, birthdays, special dinners and other such occasions.

Versatility is perhaps one of the major reasons behind Utsavâ€™s success. It has both the smaller groups of diners as well as larger groups, and entertains its clientele every evening with cultural shows. Soft lighting, old-fashioned decor and soothing music in the background creates an ambience for the diners to relax and enjoy their meals.

The entire experience begins appetizing snacks like popcorn and fried potato cubes, served in traditional brassware. Such utensils are considered clean hygienic.

Locally brewed alcohol is served optionally, poured from an antiquated brass pitcher known as a â€˜karuwaâ€™, into small clay bowls. Immediately before the main dish, a plate of Nepali chicken momo (local dumplings) is served accompanied by traditional sauce made from sesame and tomatoes.

The main course is the Nepali thali set. Thali is an Indian style platter consisting of a selection of various dishes served on a large round brass plate. The variety of items leave the diner spoilt for choice. The thali of this particular restaurant has chicken curry, rice, fish, a variety of vegetables cooked in different ways and more.
